We got the Paper Bag Princess when J was in preschool and we still read it now that she's in 2nd grade. The Rainbow Fairies I can do without, but she reads them herself and they did get her reading chapter books on her own so they have that to recommend them.
p.s. Ivy and Bean is another great series for kids just starting to read chapter books. J tore through those last summer, and they're fun for adults to read, too, reminiscent of the Ramona books, I think.
@Steph - I love the Paper Bag Princess so much. I loathed reading the Rainbow Magic fairies, but they're what got Ironflower reading chapter books independently too, so I shared them. I could not get her interested in Ivy and Bean, though.
