Really, Amazon?*

*Updated and amended

So I used to have this t-shirt with a flag and a face that said, "Censorship is Un-American." And even if my ex-husband hadn't stolen that shirt, I would totally still wear it. Although I probably couldn't still wear it as a sleep shirt. But anyway, I just wanted to point out that I am against censorship.

But I am still very glad that Amazon was forced to take the how-to abuse children guide down. I found out about it on Twitter, as I find out about most things these days. Apparently some sicko has self-published a how-to guide for pedo*philes through the Kindle bookstore. Not a book about pedophilia, like Lolita or some psychological tome, but a book FOR pedophiles. A book that is offensive and would be considered illegal child porn if it had illustrations instead of graphic verbal descriptions. Amazon has removed offensive material in the past and has a clause barring offensive material in its self-publishing guidelines.

Look, removing this book from the Kindle store will not stop pedophiles from finding this author's information. I'm sure there are newsletters and blogs and web sites devoted to this, though I'd rather not think about them. So why do I care so much about them removing the book?

Because it's a way of saying, "We think molesting children is wrong." And when 300,000 children are sexually exploited in our country every year, not including the children abused by people they know, I think it's time we all stood up and said something. Loudly.

Since owning child porn is illegal, I cannot imagine how this would not fall under that umbrella since it addresses how to exploit children.

There aren't any pictures, so it doesn't count as child porn. But the book CLEARLY instructs pedophiles in how to be more efficient in their molestation - I have links to passages from the book.

Amazon is CHOOSING to profit from this.

Eeeew. Amazon, you just lost my holiday shopping business. You can choose to sell that book, and I can choose to buy elsewhere.

I'm horrified. Amazon chooses to sell the book, I choose to boycott Amazon until it chooses otherwise.

@MauraThere are no pictures or illustrations, so it apparently doesn't count. I wonder how we can get that law changed?

@Milehimama @ Mama Says I loved your posts - they were so informative. And it's not even like they were profiting a lot!

@Lisa R. That seems to have gotten the message across. As of this morning, the book is gone.

@LunaNik The book seems to be gone now -let's hope it stays that way.
