Dear patrons of Village Pizza,
Did you know that the last two times I took my children to a restaurant other patrons actually complimented their behavior? I swear. Last night was a little different in that my husband wasn't there and we were with another family. And I may have been more interested in talking to the mother of that family instead of keeping my children quiet, but we've been friends since we were 12 and we don't see each other that often.
So anyway, about the kids. They were having a lot of fun talking to each other, you know. They didn't run around or throw things. Not even Hugmonkey. Okay, he did run along the bench seating, but it's not like anyone else was sitting back there. But the other kids stayed in place and talked. I know it was extraordinarily loud, but they were excited. And Hugmonkey didn't scream or pull hair until a few times at the end of the meal. The truth is, you should be very impressed because the girls handled his grabbing and hair pulling so well - they didn't retaliate or even scream.
But the way you all looked at us when we (quietly) left the restaurant makes me think that you don't appreciate how well-behaved the big kids were other than the piping voices and how Hugmonkey could have been so, so much worse. So I'm sorry. Our intention was to go to Darla's Porch, the place with the kids' play area, but it was closed for a private function. If your meal was disrupted, you should really blame them. But I apologize for not making my kids behave to their usual standards.
Though next time you want a quiet meal out, maybe you should choose a place with tablecloths and high ceilings, not a place with tile everything and an area for kids' birthday parties? Just a thought.
Your fellow patron,
Triplezmom

If it makes you feel any better, my friend and I had our families together for the Renaissance Faire in North Carolina. After several hours of walking, eating, and needless to say, drinking, we all sat under a tent in the shade to rest for a few minutes.
Long story short, my friend and I were asked to leave. No, not the kids. No, not even the husbands. Apparently, we were WAY too loud while others were trying to watch a show (there was a show going on? We just thought this was a nice place to sit. Oh, look! There's a stage!)
Do you know how rude and obnoxious you have to be to get kicked out of RENAISSANCE? Yeah...exactly. Not one of my prouder moments.
Love your writing! xoxo
SOunds like your kids were great. I can remember a time when our baseball team used to go to Hi Boy after games. The boys would get all wild (after some pop) and be a little loud. but
it was all good cause we werent the only baseball team to come in there after a game.
Not that it was an excuse to get wild, but that is just how it was in there. Anyone who came to eat there knew it.
It was a place for the kids.
Funny post.
My two crumbsnatchers are now college students. But over the years I was always complimented on how well behaved they were. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you threaten to kill your children constantly or at least do some kind of permanent damage.
My parents need to find a new pizza place. Long story short, my dad was angry with their delivery guy and ran out to yell at him while holding a fork in just his underwear. Now my mom is mad at him because it was her favorite pizza place and they can't go there anymore because she's humiliated!
@Lori Stefanac (Lola) Now that makes me feel better on so many levels. Also? I want to go to a Renaissance Festival with you next time.
@KittyCat I think the problem with this place is that it can't decide if it's for kids or adults.
@ReggieClearly I need to be more threatening. :) Also, I like "crumbsnatchers".
@Am I Really Grown Up? Your dad sounds like a lot of fun. Probably not for your mom, though.
Hiya Triplezmom! I'm the husband of the owner of Darla's Porch. I'm really glad you think of Darla's as a place you can feel comfortable to take the kids without ever worrying someone might look at you sideways. [and by the way, sorry we were closed for the private party! it was the northern highlands 20 year reunion!]. My wife started the place because we have had so many difficult meals out with our four kids, and thought that others would appreciate a place where the kids could be occupied in the playroom (the "Yard") so the adults could enjoy their meal and conversation. This is her first venture, and it hasn't been easy! If you have any comments/suggestions on things we could do differently that would make the place even better for you, please pass along. We'd absolutely respect your point of view. her email is www.darlasporch.com. thanks again!!!
@AnonymousWe love, love, love, Darla's Porch. And I was just teasing about blaming you guys. We will be visiting (in real life and on the web) soon!
