My husband has a thing for long-haired brunettes. He managed to get over this long enough to fall for me when I had shoulder length blond hair, but he's been waging a subtle campaign to get me to have long brown hair ever since. Just like I've been encouraging him to keep his hair longer and to have a goatee.
My hair is currently a shade of brown. Not the shade that matches my roots, which have gotten so dark that the one time I tried to match them I left the salon looking like a Goth wannabe. It's more like the shade I had has a child, although that's hard to remember since I started dyeing my hair after discovering Sun-In at 14.
Hot Guy currently has a goatee. He has refrained from shaving his head.
But last week the chick at Great Clips disturbed our detente. My hair is shorter than shoulder length. By at least an inch or more. I liked it until I got home. Then I became concerned.
Hot Guy HATES my new hair cut. I hate my old medium length, slightly layered, just stick it in a ponytail hair. Hot Guy has threatened to shave his head and his goatee. Feeling as free and light as I do with my new hair, I have said that I didn't mind if he did all that shaving.
Because even though I'm wigged out by how short it is (I can't even put it in a ponytail!!!!!!!!!!), and how some people have noted that I got it cut without politely commenting on its attractiveness (in my defense, some other people have said they like it. Really), I think I needed a change. Or at least a break from ponytails.
Hot Guy, it should be noted, has not yet shaved anything. If he does, I will not complain as I did the last several times he got rid of the goatee or cut his hair really short. I've finally accepted that he has to do what makes him happiest, not what I'd prefer.
What about you? Do you keep your hair a certain way because your partner prefers it that way? Or do you just worry about keeping yourself happy?

My husband commented on how cute some guy's goatee was so I grew one for him. He liked it, but it drove me crazy. I was always messing with it, and it's much harder to keep groomed than just shaving my face. So after a year I told him I was going to shave it off. He said I could do whatever I want. I shaved it a few days later, he didn't even notice for almost a week. My point is, if he doesn't like the goatee, let him shave it. They are irritating in a way that having brunette hair is not. But you can insist he doesn't shave his head, it's only fair if he doesn't want you to shave your head.
I definitely give in, but not much. I always want black or dark-dark-almost-black-but-with-a-warm-tone-to-it brown hair, and hubs likes red heads and thinks I look too pale with black hair (that's the point- I was outright goth for almost 10 years and still like to keep my hand in). My natural hair color is rather pretty, but thoroughly unflattering. I'm too lazy to deal with bleach to do my ideal blue, Crayola red, green, etc hair, so I compromise and do unnatural red hair. It's bright enough to brighten my face, unnatural enough to make me happy, and red enough to make him happy. :-D
Thank goodness I don't have to worry about growing a goatee, but we would definitely have issues if he ever shaved his off!
my husband is in the long brown hair category. i recently cut it to just above shoulder length. still able to ponytail, which its usually always in, but i could tell when i came home he wasn't that big of a fan. it's probably a little shorter than i would normally do but thought it was a nice chance but i doubt that it will be this short again.
@Jeff, I can't picture you with a goatee at all! I need pictures. Anyway, I think he's ambivalent about the goatee - it wasn't my idea in the first place, I swear. When he really wants to scare me, he talks about a full beard.
@WordVixen, That sounds like a good compromise. Though I'd love to see you with rainbow hair. :)
Long live the goatee!
@Travis Erwin, Absolutely. I need to send my husband over to your blog!
It's funny because I am pretty much "I don't give a shit what you think" kind of gal but yes when it comes to pleasing my husband i WANT to.
By nature my hair is curly/kinky. When I was married to my first husband i straightened it and whenever I went to the salon they styled it with the curly look. My Ex used to freak and i always had to remind him that it would straighten out once I washed it.
Now I live at the beach with husband #2 and the humidity makes my hair crazy curly...little ringlets. When I go to the salon the hairdresser straightens it which freaks husband #2 out! Fortunately husband #2 is smarter then the Ex and realizes the things will go back to normal once I wash my hair.
Boring? Sorry i just always think it is funny how different these two men are from eachother and I was married to both of them.
Apparently, I misrepresented myself when we met - so he thought (and fell in love with) the shoulder length straight haired me. I like my own hair long and naturally wavy/curly. I do try and make nice, and go to get my twice annual haircut around the time we try and go away overnight and have them blow it out straight ;) That's about my only compromise! And he proposed to me clean-shaven and promptly grew a much-asked-for goatee a week later, and it's been there ever since. YAY! When Eric wants to really scare me, he threatens to shave it off (wah!). Or to keep just the 1920's thin mustache (double wah!). I think he'd look a little too rabbinical with a full beard, what do you think?!
@Jersey Girl Gets Real, Comparing husbands is always funny, isn't it? And I am totally jealous of your ringlets.
@Lisa B., I can't picture you with straight hair at all! You have to do that before book club some time. :) I'm usually not a fan of the full beard, guys usually look rabbinical, Unabomber or Hell's Angel with one. So tell Eric I said no too. :)
have you ever tried avast antivirus before?
