Take It Back Now, Y'All

In a (lame) attempt to broaden my children's musical horizons, we have been listening to the "Music Choice" channels provided by Cablevision. We've discovered that the whole family mellows out while listening to the swing channel and that Daddy can't stand disco. Hubby actually eschews all things bubblegum, so I made sure he wasn't home when we checked out the "For Kidz Only" music channel.

Apparently all kids are actually tweens, because every song sounded like (or actually was) Hannah Montana and High School Musical. Just as I was about to turn to the '80's channel (because my kids - thankfully - don't care about Hannah Montana yet), I heard something familiar. I had to double check and make sure that I hadn't already switched the channel. But no, those were the dulcet tones of the "Cha Cha Slide" on the kids' music channel.

I think the first time I heard the "Cha Cha Slide" was in a club over ten years ago. That's right, I said, "club". I also said, "ten years ago". What the hell is old club music doing on the kids' music channel? Is old club music being appropriated by the tweens? (which would not be half as cool as when my friends and I refused to listen to music made after 1980) Or is this like when I learned the Hustle in seventh grade gym and my teacher realized that she was old?

I think that we learned to hustle in 7th grade. It never crossed my mind that we were making our teachers feel old. I sometimes still can't believe that Gen X and slackers are in their mid-30s. Bleh. That would be me.

Ha! I remember learning the Hustle in middle school. That and the Alley Cat...

I co-direct a kids theatre camp in the summer and we always play the cha cha slide for the 4-8 year olds at the end of the day. In fact my first experience with the cha cha slide was at this camp 4 years ago. Apparently it was on some kids album one of the other directors had. I had no idea it didn't start out as kids music.

I think that's a bit odd. But, I also freaked out this morning when I heard Take Me out to the Ballgame redone for the Backyardigans...with different words.

I've never heard that before! Maybe I lived under a rock? Or I'm truly old old old! lol.

I stumbled across your blog and loved it - thanks!

Our kids 3rd & 4th grades do the cha-cha slide every morning in school as their "morning exercises" ... they are quite cute filling the halls jumping, clapping and the "charlie brown" kills me!

hahaha. Give it a few more years and it will be considered "classic rock" a few more and it will be "classical music".

Have you seen the McDonalds commercial with this song -- cracks me up.

I love the McDonald's commercial too! I didn't realize this song was a club song (I am such a dork) until my husband's Christmas party this year. They started that song and I was wondering where the kids were. Needless to say, I didn't know the moves and got danced right off the floor!

They played this at a mother/son dance I went to three years ago...and all the kids knew ALL the moves, even my son! I was all "wha..? Huh? How do you know this?" It's on his iPod now. Next I expect he'll start doing the Electric Slide. Y'all remember that one?
